Community

We’re here to serve whenua and whānau, in a spirit of enrichment and connection that flows through everything we do. Discover how whānau and community inspire us to do better every day.

With indigenous connections of our own to the seaside settlement of Waimārama, we felt the pull of our whakapapa to employ our knowledge and skills of farming and enterprise in a place we already felt a deep sense of connection to. We met with the local hapū and it was decided that KANAPU Hempery would serve a role in assisting whānau to take back guardianship status of their land, via organic farming systems.

As Hine-raumati reached out to embrace us, it became clear access to water would give our first crops a head start in their first organic season. We directed our attention to obtaining a water-take from the Waingongoro Stream through council for the local hapū. Spearheaded by tāngata whenua Innika Broadman, we succeeded. Securing a water-take for tamariki|mokopuna and generations to come.

Every Sunday morning, you’ll find us at the local Hawkes Bay Farmers’ Market nestled amongst the peaceful Waikoko Gardens in Hastings. A place where the region’s finest growers and artisan producers offer the chance to see, taste, and smell their products before buying direct from the source. Bringing to life a traditional method of selling wares and providing an educational experience to our community. Now one of the largest and long serving farmers’ markets in Aotearoa, we are honoured to serve our role in connecting with community and to be a member of the Hawkes Bay Farmers’ Market Inc.
